The secret power of POSITIVITY - Anastasios Stalikas, Ph.D

In this talk we address the main questions surrounding the importance and the beneficial role that experiencing positive emotions plays in our lives. We will answer questions like: what is the value of positive emotions? What’s the difference between positive emotions  and positive thinking? What can we do to increase our levels of positivity? What are the reasons we do not experience positive emotions more often? Why are negative emotions  more frequent and more intense  than positive emotions? And finally, What is the secret power of positivity?

Deep Learning in Xamarin apps! Enter ML.NET
ML.NET is an open-source framework for machine learning that is available for .NET developers. We can train, build and deploy ML models for several scenarios: sentiment analysis, value prediction, and image classification with deep learning. The models can then be saved and consumed from other applications (web, desktop & mobile for instance, mainly exposing it as a REST API). In this session, we will explore ML.NET and the above scenarios. Then, we'll create a deep learning model for image classification that will be saved & included in an ASP .NET Core REST API to make this ML task available to a Xamarin mobile app that sends images as part of a request to a server.

Building a Blazor Web Assembly app to identify developer's expertise from Github repos using LUIS.
A GitHub profile is becoming an essential part of a developer’s resume enabling HR departments to extract someone’s expertise, through automated analysis of his/her contribution to open-source projects. At the same time, having clear insights on the technologies used in a project can be very beneficial for resource allocation and project maintainability planning. In the literature, one can identify various approaches for identifying expertise on programming languages, based on the projects that developer contributed to. In this presentation, we move one step further and introduce an approach (accompanied by a tool created with Blazor WebAssembly) to identify low-level expertise on particular software frameworks and technologies apart, relying solely on GitHub data, using the GitHub API and Natural Language Processing (NLP)—using the Microsoft Language Understanding Intelligent Service (LUIS). In particular, we developed an NLP model in LUIS for named-entity recognition for three (3) .NET technologies and two (2) front-end frameworks. During the case study presentation we dive in to Blazor framework and the GitHub API as well as to the Microsoft Language Understanding Intelligense Service (LUIS).

Implementing the "Zero Trust" strategy in practice
We are aware of the fact that most individuals and companies have embraced cloud computing nowadays and all the benefits it provides as such. The number of cloud users, especially users of Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 is expanding every day. However, malicious users and criminal activists quickly realized potential advantages (or, eventually, disadvantages) of cloud technologies and are often few steps ahead of us. Today's data is in the cloud, on the go, on mobile phones, laptops, tablets - it is no longer residing solely on premises, or within company boundaries, but also in a public data centre. In order to effectively protect and combat attacks and data theft, it is necessary to fundamentally change how we think and to change the approach to the concept of computer infrastructure security we had until now. In this lecture you will learn what the "Zero Trust" strategy is, which is why it is extremely important, and most importantly, we will show the implementation of the "Zero Trust" strategy in the Microsoft cloud in practice.

Simplify data management with partitioning
The times of small database systems are now over. Even "small" systems already provide databases with several 100 GB data volume. It can be a real challenge for the DBA to complete the daily maintenance tasks, data backup, consistency checks, ... in a reasonable time frame. With the help of partitioning (also a feature of the Standard Edition since SQL 2016), considerable advantages in ETL processes, maintenance and backup / recovery can be achieved. The main area of application for partitioning is the optimization of the load paths for complex DWH solutions and the maintenance of large databases (statistics, indexes, backups, restores). The very strongly demo-based session shows partitioning scenarios that let the DBA do alternative things again and encourage ETL developers to dance the joys.

How can you make time for real innovation and improvement? How do you know what to automate? How do you escape process prison? How can you get everyone aligned to make a difference? Flow Engineering builds on Value Stream Mapping as a framework of techniques you can use right now, with materials you already have - to discover opportunities, build and share your vision and save hours of toil every week so you can invest in what's next. Sprinkle it on your: - Delivery/Data/Testing/Analytics/Logging Pipeline - Developer/Customer Onboarding - Environment Provisioning - Failure Recovery/Incident Management/Support Triage - SDLC - Toil/Process of choice, you get it :) …and start spending more time on what's next I’ve started using Flow Engineering after years of struggling to find time for innovation, rally buy-in, optimize processes and communicate ideas, issues, and risks. It has helped me many times go from tearing my hair out (and I have the baldness to prove it!) to knowing exactly how to level up. Automating Azure SQL Database maintenance tasks
Azure SQL Database hasn't got a native scheduling service comparable to SQL Agent that is present in the on-premise instances. When database solutions are implemented in Azure SQL, after the design phase of DB schema, possible solutions to perform database maintenance activities like Integrity Check, Index Rebuild etc… have to be studied. On the contrary, Backup activity already has an excellent default configuration given by Microsoft Azure platform. In this session we will learn the necessary activities to undertake in order to perform the maintenance of databases in Azure SQL; moreover, possible solutions will be explained and more convenient services will be described.

There is a misguided conception that we all need to be rocket scientists to use machine learning in production - to this I say balderdash! ... Machine learning is an engineering skill that developers need to add to their bag of tricks, and the journey doesn't have to be painful. The aim of this session is to give a solid crash-course in "just enough" Machine Learning that attendees can apply the skills learned in a practical manner, in code, immediately. Programming with TypeScipt's type system: interfaces to love and hate
Newest features of TypeScript 4.0 and upcoming 4.1 are making its type system literally a one more programming language - not only to reduce declaration files, but to make expressive and eloquent statements. There is a types algebra - and even numeric algebra - with addition and substraction, array iteration and strings operations, and, which is most important, a conditional recursion. And, what is weird, it stands somewhere between Lisp and Prolog. It is now good enough to write code that acts like it has runtime-level types, and smart enough to make people who will read your PR with that code think of you as an intellectual. Come & listen for it if you want to impress your collegues (and also make them hate you while trying to understand complex types you wrote).

Your application, in Azure, Secure!
One of the reasons a lot of IT Professionals < strike > are < /strike > were skeptical about the Cloud was security and the concept of the "shared responsibility model". The goal of this presentation is to demystify Azure Security and explain how you can launch securely your application on Azure. We will go through the activities you need to follow and explain the tools that Azure provides to secure your application. Topics that we will examine include network security, identity and access management, data protection and encryption. We will present how you can cover security requirements set during the Secure Development Life cycle (SDLC) as well as compliance requirements, such as the OWASP Top 10, GDPR and PCI DSS. At the end of the presentation you will realize that securely deploying an application can actually be easier, and more secure, in Azure!

Azure Synapse Analytics SQL Pool Workload Management

Power BI dataflows : Going beyond the self-service
What was already good has became even better. We were already able to make ETL in Power BI using M, now, using the Power BI Data Flows we are able to store the ETL on the Power BI Portal, control the ETL execution, the data among many ETL steps and share the result with many Power BI files, instead of having to duplicate M scripts across different .PBIX files This feature allow us to create a more complex and re-usable ETL solution, creating small dataflows and allowing them to be reused in a dataflow hierarchy, which can be re-used in many different datasets, creating a more robust and reusable architecture. Self-Service AI with Power BI
AI is everywhere – and now even included in Power BI Desktop. Power BI Desktop is Microsoft’s free tool for self-service BI. It’s updated every single month with exciting new features and Gartner declared it since 2019 to THE leading BI Tool (which led Tableau and Qlik behind). Sometimes AI might be very apparent when you enrich your data with predictions by explicitly calling an Azure Machine Learning web service in Power Query. Sometimes it might be hidden in a nice little context menu when Power BI is automagically explaining the reason of a difference or a change over time in your data to you. No matter if you are a business user, analyst or data scientist – Power BI has AI capabilities tailored to you. In this session we will compare features (built-in, DAX, R, Python, and Azure services) by applying three typical machine learning applications in Power BI Desktop: time series analysis, correlation analysis, and text mining. We will spend the majority of time in live demos. Air-gapping and the accompanying immense challenges for updating, activating and monitoring for admins are truly referred back to the 80s in this session. Sander has met a lot of old-fashioned CISOs the last couple of years that truly believed air-gapping their environments and requiring multi-multi-multi-factor authentication for access off-premises was the way to go. In this session he’ll show how organizations can: 1. Require multi-factor authentication only when needed because of risk 2. Get notified of leaked credentials 3. Ban bad passwords 4. Manage fragile Domain Controllers better 5. Get back on top of the millions of events that currently burden down their current SIEM solution Sander has built a couple of exciting demos to showcase the strengths of Azure AD, Azure AD Connect Health and Azure Sentinel to really blow these CISOs’ minds!

Dynatrace is a Software Intelligence platform that is based on AI to provide automatic root cause analysis. AI baselines are based on topology and metrics that the OneAgent collects from the monitored machines. By installing OneAgent in all tiers of the application, Dynatrace is able to track each individual request end to end, create baselines and alert automatically. Dynatrace also supports monitoring in cloud and containerized environments. Integration with Azure Monitor offers infrastructure monitoring insights even in serverless scenarios, while integration with Kubernetes provides all Kubernetes API related metrics. Monitoring all these metrics and transactions in today's complex environments require an automated way of analysis and alerting. Using Azure Policy initiatives for organizational governance
Challenges arise within a cloud environment when resources can be created that may affect, cost, security, or regulatory jurisdictions. Role-based access control (RBAC) and the principles of least privilege provide levels of restriction to users and groups within the environment as to what resources they can access or create, but they do not set parameters on where they can be created, the level of cost, or the security requirements. Azure policies are created, assigned, and utilized to govern the resources within your Azure subscription. Policies should be put in place based on the business, security, and financial requirements of the organization. This session will explore these three areas and examples of each that can be assigned and monitored.

Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time
Σύμφωνα με τον golden circle του Simon Sinek, σε κάθε έργο απαντούμε σε 3 ερωτήσεις: WHY, HOW, WHAT. Δεν είναι τυχαίο ότι το τελευταίο βιβλίο του Jeff Sutherland (co-author της Scrum) που κυκλοφόρησε στις 30.9.2014 τιτλοφορείται: «Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time».

Azure Functions and APIM
You want to go serverless. You think Azure functions are cool, but you're not sure how to use them. You also have put something out there but you don't know how to secure it. Another problem you've encountered is the fact that your users don't like having "all of those links and keys". What do you do? In this session, we'll see a practical approach for all of this using azure functions and APIM, and we'll see how to lock everything down and get the right information to the correct users with one entry point, regardless of how many different back-end operations we have.

After finishing my PhD in the cross-section of Management Science and Technology, I pursued a career in Consulting as an outlet for my desire to work in a dynamic field.I started as an Analyst in Accenture’s Technology practice and was soon promoted to a Consultant where I mostly worked for the delivery of complex business transformation and system integration projects. My job involved various tasks, from requirements analysis, functional and technical design, testing and continuous improvement to team leading and interacting with clients. Due to the nature of the projects, the work I produced was performed under challenging circumstances something that taught me to be resilient, flexible, team-oriented, focused and committed to results. When I was promoted to Manager, I aligned with Accenture’s Digital practice and the Athens Innovation Center for Advanced Analytics. I consider this alignment as better fitting my career aspirations, my accumulated experience within the company, my educational background and skills. As a Digital manager, I worked closely with clients helping them harvest the hidden power of their data and implement advanced analytics techniques for embedding them into their business processes targeting customer and marketing activities. My work was cross-industry with an extra focus on Telecommunications, Financial Services and Resources and overpasses the Greek boundaries as we support clients across the globe.I recently started a new role in Microsoft as Marketing Lead for the Cloud business. In this new and very exciting role, I am responsible for promoting Microsoft’s cloud strategy, working closely with sales, partners and services teams.I am excited about the future of Digital and how technologies like AI are reshaping how we work and live our lives and want to continue participating in challenging transformation initiatives that create value for businesses and people alike.

A highly intellectually agile person and a passionate learner, I’m fortunate to operate in an industry and organisation where my curiosity is challenged on a daily basis. With Digital Transformation pushing companies to change their business models and adapt to a game-changing market reality, it’s an exciting time & place to be the Director of Marketing & Operations.Digital Transformation has presented major challenges for marketers and the marketplace, as organizations increasingly find themselves pursued by competitors attracted by the low entry barriers. If we want to help our clients improve their customer journey, we also need to take an experiential learning journey with them, something which I encourage my team to do.That means immersing ourselves in their business so we really understand their culture, not just their digital requirements. After all technology impacts on people.Even the smallest Digital Transformation doesn’t just affect the business: it introduces cultural changes to the organization as people must constantly adapt to new technologies and processes.Part of my job is to ensure we accurately locate what the customer feels is missing, the gaps in knowledge as well as what we’re being told. Clarity is essential to me.When I work with my team, I try to push their curiosity, so that they understand the client’s unsaid needs. Asking questions and leading the client can help achieve this clarity faster. This is important.Because the earlier on we can identify the customer’s point of pain, the faster we can guide them to the right business solution.
